Swizz Beatz Talks ‘Poison,’ Lil Wayne’s “Uproar,” & His First Time In The Studio With JAY-Z On ‘For The Record’

Veteran Bronx producer and rapper Swizz Beatz just released his sophomore studio album, POISON. Executive produced by J. Cole, the 10-track project includes appearances by Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, Young Thug, 2 Chainz, Pusha-T, and more. On the latest episode of For The Record, Swizz sits down with Genius' Head of Artist Relations, Rob Markman, to discuss making the album, producing Lil Wayne’s latest hit, “Uproar,” and playing JAY-Z beats for the first time.

Swizz explains that the purpose of POISON is showcasing the featured artists at their finest. “The artists that’s on the record have to perform to the level of which you love them for, and which you’ve known them for or better,” he tells Genius. “That’s how I narrowed down a lot of the tracks on the record. It was like, I want everybody to be on their maximum A-game, whether it’s the best storytelling you’ve heard. Whether it’s hearing Young Thug on a DMX beat in a way that you didn’t expect. For me, that’s fun and it’s adding something to the bigger picture.”

He continues by elaborating on what’s so special about “Uproar,” which ended up on The Carter V because it wasn’t completed in time to make the final POISON tracklist. “A lot of the sounds out there, it don’t make you really move like how what we’re seeing on ‘Uproar,’” Swizz says. “And so I just felt that even Wayne spirit changed, right. Even with him doing the ‘Uproar’ challenge with his kids, you would never see that. He don’t have the entry point to do that.”

To close out the conversation, Swizz remembers meeting his longtime collaborator JAY-Z for the first time. “I don’t think they could find [Ruff Ryders producer Dame] Grease that particular day,” he recalls. “My uncle was like, ‘Yo, come on, we going down to see Jigga and… you better have your stuff.’ I always had like a tape with like 50 beats on it… I played the tape and he was just like, ‘I want the whole tape.’”
