“Your shine and your glow is crucial to me.”

In the run-up to the release of his debut album blkswn earlier this year, St. Louis-based rapper Smino dropped his single “Anita.” The track is produced by Monte Booker, and is named after legendary singer-songwriter Anita Baker. Smino previously explained that the track was partially inspired by the 2016 film Hidden Figures, and he further broke down his meaning behind the song to Genius.

“ I woke up, and I played that shit and I was like, ‘Somebody play some Anita Baker,’ and I was just like, ‘Damn, let me cut on this, Anita,’” he tells Genius about the track. “Anita is my momma, Anita is my sister, Anita is my shawty. Anita is every woman that has ever impacted my life. You know what I’m saying?”

Smino recently sat down with Genius for the latest episode of Verified and broke down his popping track. Watch him go line-for-line with “Anita” in the video above, and check out past episodes, too.
