Lupe Fiasco Apologizes For Dismissing Kendrick Lamar’s Lyrical Abilities

“I apologize for even engaging and talking about niggas careers.”

Lupe Fiasco has voiced his skepticism about Kendrick Lamar’s lyrical abilities for a few years now, but it sounds like he may be experiencing some regret about coming after the Compton MC. In a recent Instagram Live broadcast, Lupe apologized for voicing his opinions on Lamar’s rapping ability, although didn’t exactly retract his previous statements.

“Maybe I should have just left it alone. Even though my impetus was the ‘Control’ verse,” he said. “I mean you put yourself out there like that. So, you opened yourself up to critique, but even that still, I should have just shut my fucking mouth. I apologize for even engaging and talking about niggas careers, I’ll never do that shit again.”

Fans will recall that Lupe infamously dissed Kendrick during a Hot 97 interview back in 2014, shortly after Kendrick called out a huge list of rappers on Big Sean’s “Control.” After accusing host Peter Rosenberg of over-praising Kendrick, Lupe listed Cassidy, King Los, and Logic as examples of rappers who he thinks are better lyricists than Kendrick:

In January 2018, he doubled down on his criticism in a now-deleted tweet:

I’ll put it to you like this. K. Dot is not a top tier lyricist to me and my standards when it comes to punchlines and bars. His overall lyrics are good, his stories phenomenal, but punchline entendre lyrically I don’t see it.

He also further claimed that Kendrick’s “Control” verse wasn’t as great as it was portrayed by the media and other rappers. “I’ve never been destroyed. Also the only issue that the world thinks I have with K. Dot and I actually do is that I think his ‘Control’ verse was wack and super overhyped to be a verse claiming you are the best rapper,” he wrote. “It was very weird. I was told it was just bait, but still.”

Kendrick has never directly responded to Lupe’s criticisms.
