Cam’ron Co-Wrote 3LW’s 2000 Hit “No More (Baby I’ma Do Right)”

“For the right price, I’ll get your shit tighter.”

Early 2000s pop fans surely remember “No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)” by R&B group 3LW, but they may not know that The Diplomats rapper Cam'ron co-wrote it. Although the credits have never been a secret, the topic resurfaced on Thursday night after the Harlem native’s mother Fredericka Giles took to Instagram and shared a post explaining that her son contributed to the track. In addition to receiving comments disputing her claim, Cam’s mother claims that she ran into problems with Sony, the owner of 3LW’s label, Epic Records.

To clear the air, Cam'ron shared an Instagram post of his own. “My mom was just telling me how Sony was hating on her about a song that I co-wrote for Three Little Women,” he said in the video while showing off the platinum plaque he received for the track. “This is my name. This is a million sales. Shout out to Sony. Shout out to Three Little Women. Appreciate the opportunity, but don’t call my momma a liar.”

“Ghostwriter,” he added. “For the right price, I’ll get your shit tighter.” While Cam'ron refers to himself as a ghostwriter in the video, that’s not actually the case. While a ghostwriter is usually paid for their contributions to a song, they don’t appear in the credits. In this case, Cam'ron is clearly listed on ASCAP as one of the writers alongside Nate Butler and Sean “Sep” Hall.

Back in 2011, Cam'ron claimed that he wrote Lil' Cease’s verses on “Crush On You” from Lil' Kim’s 1996 debut album Hard Core. “[Untertainment CEO Lance] Un [Rivera] gave Ma$e $30,000 to write five songs for Lil’ Cease at that time and Ma$e gave me $5,000 of the 30 to write one or two of the songs,” he told XXL. I wrote the ‘Crush on You’ song and they ended up keeping it for Lil’ Kim album but it was really for Lil’ Cease. The original ‘Crush on You’ is all Lil’ Cease, Lil’ Kim isn’t even on the record.“ As Cam'ron notes, the album version of "Crush On You” only features Cease’s verses, while the single adds rhymes from Kim. Regardless, Cam'ron isn’t listed in the songwriting credits.

The lyrics on “No More” call out men for their contradictory behavior:

Ya treat me like a lady when you open doors ‘n’ doors
Then you wanna front when you’re wit your boys, your boys
How you gonna play me when I bought your clothes, your clothes
The ones that you be wearin when you wit your dogs, your dog

3LW consists of Kiely Williams, Naturi Naughton, and Adrienne Bailon, the latter of whom would go on to achieve further success as part of Disney Channel’s The Cheetah Girls and as a solo artist. “No More” is the group’s biggest hit and comes from its 2000 self-titled debut album. The song peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2001 and spent 25 total weeks on the chart.
