Consequences

Camila Cabello

Consequences Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Dirty tissues, trust issues
Glasses on the sink, they didn't fix you
Lonely pillows in a stranger's bed
Little voices in my head
Secret keeping, stop the bleeding
Lost a little weight because I wasn't eating
All the souls that I can't listen to, to tell the truth

[Chorus 1]
Loving you was young, and wild, and free
Loving you was cool, and hot, and sweet
Loving you was sunshine, safe and sound
A steady place to let down my defenses
But loving you had consequences

[Verse 2]
Hesitation, awkward conversation
Running on low expectation
Every siren that I was ignoring
I'm paying for it

[Chorus 1]
Loving you was young, and wild, and free
Loving you was cool, and hot, and sweet
Loving you was sunshine, safe and sound
A steady place to let down my defenses
But loving you had consequences

[Bridge]
No, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Said, no, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
Hey, yeah, no, ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, mm

[Chorus 2]
Loving you was dumb, dark, and cheap
Loving you will still take shots at me
Found loving you was sunshine, but then it poured
And I lost so much more than my senses
'Cause loving you had consequences

[Outro]
Yeah, loving you

About “Consequences”

“Consequences” is the sixth track of Camila Cabello’s debut album, Camila. The Sun’s review of the album describes it as Camila’s “most deeply personal and tear-jerking ballad with her powerful vocals against a delicate piano”. According to The Times, the song “sounds like an unlikely cross between Mariah Carey and Joni Mitchell, and it is rather lovely.”

It can be seen as the follow-up of the relationship portrayed in “Never Be The Same”:

It’s kind of like the aftermath of “Never Be the Same”. I feel like a lot of the songs could be in this one story, and all the different phases, and I feel like “Consequences” is the aftermath of a love that was intoxicating like that and hard to get out of your mind or the kind of the love that you compare to everybody else and it’s not the same.

The track is one of the first songs from the album that Camila worked on. It. was first hinted at a year before the song’s release via Twitter. The lyrics are based on a relationship Camila had and the vocals were re-done seven times:

It was one of the first songs that I worked on. It was the first week of January [2017] that I worked on it. For the version that you heard, I re-did the vocals for the seventh time on November. I re-did it so many times because I wanted it to just capture it. And I feel like the song is a way of letting people in, if that makes sense.

In a livestream, Camila told that “Consequences” was one of the songs she was most excited to share with her fans.

This song was first performed live on April 9, 2018, during the “Never Be The Same Tour” on Vancouver. It was also the first time Camila played the keyboard live.

  • What have the artists said about the song?

I love how in that song there’s no regret in it (loving deeply). It’s kinda acknowledging, “yeah I’m dealing with the aftermath but it’s not like I should’ve never… This was so intense and crazy and now it sucks but it was still worth it.”

  • How was the vocal production process?

I did the vocals with my vocal producer and then when I re-did the vocals, I just sat with my engineer and I just did it. It was like, ‘okay, now we’re gonna punch this part, now we’re gonna punch that part’. I just ended up using that because it felt to me like the most raw. It just felt better.
